What is Critical Power in Cycling?
Critical Power (CP) in cycling is the maximum power output sustainable for approximately 45-60 minutes. It represents the boundary between moderate and severe exercise intensity domains.
This calculator uses the Monod & Scherrer model, based on two effort tests (5 and 20 minutes) to estimate your CP. It is a reference in exercise physiology.
How to use this calculator?
- Perform a 5-minute test at maximum sustainable power
- After full recovery (24-48h), perform a 20-minute test at maximum sustainable power
- Enter your average power values (in Watts) in the calculator
- Your CP, estimated FTP and W' will be calculated automatically
Why calculate your CP?
- Define your FTP zones with precision
- Plan your interval sessions effectively
- Track your physiological progress
- Optimize your pacing on long distance
CP vs FTP: what is the difference?
CP is based on a precise mathematical model (Monod & Scherrer), while FTP is estimated as 95% of 20-minute power. CP offers a more scientific and personalized approach to your threshold.
💡 BPC Tip : Repeat these tests every 6-8 weeks to track your progress.
